The Crops are In!

A Few Rows of Corn
The garden is planted. This year, I think I will be a bit more successful with the harvest than previous years as heavy duty fences have been put up around the grains, vegtables, berries, and fruits. Last year I had thought a nice cheap fence of chicken wire would do the trick. But alas, it proved no match for little pigs, goats, and sheep that saw the tempting morsels growing on the other side. This year, the various gardens have been fenced off with much heavier fence. So far, the pigs have not been able to enter and root up the seeds planted. Let’s see how things go once the lush leaves tempt them.
I have several areas with things planted. Rasberries and Blackberries. Several vareity of squash (winter and summer) as well as melons. The old staples of tomatoes and cucumbers, green and hot peppers (including one of my favorite hot pepper, the habenero), and corn. I also have a lot of new herbs planted. Of course basil, both Italian and Thai. Oregano, thyme, rosemary, lemon grass, and cilantro. The cilantro is a very interesting variety which I highly recommend. It is Vietnamese cilantro which doesn’t look a think like regular cilantro. The taste is very close, but perhaps a bit more peppery. The real benifit of vietnamese cilantro is that it doesn’t bolt in the hot sun. It is heat tolerant, and tastes great.
The winter tolerant plants will be put in later this fall.
There are many other veggies and fruits growing here, but I won’t bore people with the growing of Asparagus, onions, and the fruit trees all around the property. For now, I am pleased with the progression of the garden and look forward to the harvesting of the delicious, natural products produced. As long as certain piglets remain contented on the other side of the garden fence, I am expecting a plentiful harvest.
