Nothing brands the memory more like fresh blood on white snow.  A few months ago my friend (and fellow blogger here) discovered his favorite rooster dead.  At first, the death appeared to be from natural causes.  Jorge’s lifeless body was found lying on the floor of the chicken coop one crisp winter’s morning.  It looked as though Jorge had just toppled from his perch in the middle of the night, but after a closer look, my friend realized that there was more to the story than that.  There was blood on the rooster’s talons.

Behind the coop, there were small footprints leading away from the coop.  And then tiny, droplets of blood on the starch, settled snow.  We can only surmise what went on the night before, but we believe that Jorge sacrificed his life for his hens.

A noble bird indeed!

A noble bird indeed!

Piscataway Acres has seen other tragedies of greater and lesser magnitude.  We almost lost our peach tree to the destructive habits of a local beaver.  And last summer, our corn crop was ravaged in spite of what we thought was our secure garden fence (we’re not naming names–they’re innocent until proven guilty).  Along with these disappointments, we have seen our duck population decimated and the remains of other chickens, besides Jorge, left behind by predators, such as this guy.

Why am I telling you all of this?  Because all of these problems could be reduced, if not solved, by good electric fencing.  When I was asked to write a post for Fi-Shock, I didn’t have to think twice because I know the value that electric fencing can provide to the (hobby) farmer trying to bring order to the chaos that ensues when there is no reliable barrier to protect your animals from predatory wildlife or to protect your fruits and vegetables from non-predatory animals that just happen to be very hungry (again, not naming any names).  I also didn’t doubt Fi-Shock’s credibility as a company.  It’s been specializing in electric fencing since 1968 and is still going strong.  And companies don’t last that long unless they’re doing something right.  I think a huge part of Fi-Shock’s appeal is probably the fact that they strive to make fences adaptable to all kinds of farms and are just as adaptable in meeting the needs of their customers.  If you are thinking of electric fencing or fencing at all, you should check out Fi-Shock and you might avoid the tragedies we’ve experienced.
