Apprehended

We will never be sure if it was indeed a fox that caused Watson’s premature death, but that is our hypothesis.  It seems awfully coincidental that two days after Bunny’s cardiac arrest, we discover that a fox has been lurking around the property.
Today this same fox has been apprehended.  It is not that we have [...]

Isn’t Organic Best?

I am a meat-eating, animal-lover, an omnivore who can nonetheless appreciate the value (and personalities) of living, breathing animals, even those that are not typically domesticated.  For example, keeping two pigs as house pets does not keep me from enjoying a bite of pork now and again. Some people may find this hard to [...]

There is a common belief in western culture that sheep are good and goats are bad.  Many religious sermons discuss separating the sheep from the goats (and the goats aren’t on the good side) and even in popular culture, goats are portrayed less wholesome than their ovine counterparts.  To be sheepish is to be shy, [...]

A Threatening Presence

We think we might have found the creature who did in bunny, albeit indirectly.  He’s been lurking in the shadows of the Piscataway Acres animal pens.  Yesterday was the first human sighting of horrific Mr. Fox, though we are almost certain he was sighted before by Watson the rabbit.  It is not unusual for rabbits [...]

Bunny’s Last Burrow

Watson, known to his friends as “Bunny,” was buried today in a couple of family members’ Delawarean garden with humans, pigs, and a dog in attendance.   He will be remembered.
Some things I remember about Bunny:

Feeding him raisins.
Feeding him carrots.
Chasing him back to his pen when he cleverly got loose.
The silkiness of his years.
Seeing him [...]

Mirror, Mirror, On the Wall…

Where’s the closest food in the hall? A New York Times article reports on a new study that points to a potential future of pigs driving automobiles, flying airplanes, and enjoying sophisticated dinner conversations.
OK.  It doesn’t say all that, but it provides more proof that pigs are smart:
In the current issue of Animal Behaviour, researchers [...]

A Sad Day

When one chooses to raise animals, death is a sad but real experience that one must go through.  Today was a sad day.
I went out as I normally do to feed the animals and make sure everyone was secure for the night.  I had some carrot ends that would have been a treat for Watson, [...]

In the Mountains

Strangely enough, the air was warmer in the West Virginian mountains than it was in southern Maryland.  The sky was clear and the sun strong, two contributing factors to the glowing radiance of the dying leaves around us.  As the feeble, gray clunker hobbled ever upwards over cumbersome potholes, little grunts emerged from the backseat [...]
