Juniper the Escape Artist
Juniper is our rescue pig. She, unlike Finnemore and Chesapeake, lives outside and is not allowed into the greater yard. She has a very nice room in the barn with vaulted ceilings and has a large pen that stretches out into the woods. Normally, she spends a lot of her time in the woods rooting around and eating leaves, nuts, and whatever else she can find.
You can see pictures of Juniper in the photos section.
About 8 weeks ago, Juniper gave birth to 6 healthy piglets. We have sold all but two of them and hopefully they will go this week to good homes. They have been a lot of fun and are very cute but it is time for them to find happy places to live out their lives.
The little piglets can easily jump through the fence keeping Juniper in. Until this last week, the piglets have left their mom’s side and had the run of the yard without any trouble. However, this week Juniper has decided that she wants to be out with the babies in the main yard. Pigs are strong animals and to her, there was little effort required to lift the fence up and slip underneath. Putting her back into the pen is very easy. She follows us around and will follow us right back into her pen. She is a good pig and I wish I could allow her to be out, but she doesn’t know where the borders of our property are and I worry she would wander off, or worse, run into the road. For the last few days, every evening has been spent securing the fence and putting base boards around the perimeter. With this done, I hope it will keep her from breaking out. I also hope that when the last of her piglets leave, she will calm down and go back to her contented self.
